BITTERSWEET WHISPERS

Verification & your privacy

What happens when you verify your age, what the bot keeps, and how to ask for help.

Last updated: September 16, 2026

Keep your documents out of Discord. Submit your government ID and selfie only through the private Veriff link supplied by the bot. Do not send them to staff or post them in a channel.

Why verification is used

Bittersweet Whispers uses a government-ID verification process to check age eligibility and assign verification and age-range roles. Use /verify in the server to see the current minimum age and the disclosure before continuing. If you choose not to verify, you will not receive the ID-verification roles or the access that depends on them.

What Veriff processes

The verification link takes you to Veriff. Its document-and-selfie flow processes your ID and selfie and may process extracted document information, biometric information, and device or network information. The checks and data collected depend on the configured service.

Read Veriff’s privacy notice and the information shown in its verification flow before submitting documents.

What the bot processes and stores

Veriff’s result can include identity information such as your date of birth. The bot processes the result in memory to calculate your age band, then discards the birth date. It does not download or store ID images or selfies.

The bot’s local verification record contains:

  • Your Discord user ID and this server’s ID.
  • An opaque reference and a Veriff session ID.
  • The verification outcome, age band, expiry, and processing timestamps.

The bot does not store legal names, document numbers, exact birth dates, raw provider responses, or private verification links in its database. It also checks Discord account age, bot status, and timeout status when deciding whether to assign roles.

Who can see what

Staff do not manually review your ID, selfie, or the personal details on your documents as part of this verification process. Documents go directly to Veriff for its checks. The bot uses the returned result to assign roles and does not save your ID images, selfies, legal name, document number, or birth date.

Your ID Verified and age-range roles are visible to other server members. The age bands are 13–15, 16–17, and 18+. These roles do not display your exact birth date or document details.

Staff may see verification results and age roles, and people operating the bot can access the limited records listed above. The no-manual-review policy does not itself disable access in Veriff’s portal: access there depends on the provider account’s permissions. Veriff and Discord process information within their respective services.

How long records remain

Pending local sessions expire after 24 hours. Approved local records expire 30 days after session creation, or earlier when you reach the next age-band boundary. When a record expires, the bot removes its verification roles and deletes the local record. You may need to verify again.

Role removal and deletion require the bot to be running and able to update Discord roles. If that fails, the local record remains so the bot can retry. Backups and provider-held records have separate retention arrangements.

Veriff’s retention is governed by its service arrangements and privacy notice; the bot’s 30-day period does not automatically apply to documents held by Veriff. Contact staff before verifying if you need the specific provider or backup retention period.

Questions, corrections & deletion

Use /verify_status for your current result. If it appears wrong, contact a privacy contact listed on this page.

Use /forget_verification to remove your ID roles and the bot’s local record. This can remove access to channels requiring those roles. If the command fails, contact staff for help.

This command does not delete data held by Veriff, erase Discord messages, or remove copies in backups. For those requests, or if you cannot use the bot, contact staff and identify the Discord account involved. Do not attach an ID or selfie to your request.
